Could the Halliwell Sisters Afford to Live in the Manor in Real Life?
Charmed is one of our favorite TV shows about witches. The series cast a spell on us (See what we did there?) and even today, nearly 15 years after it went off the air, we find ourselves coming back to the TV show.
Battling evil, Charmed features an equally impressive backdrop to go with the Halliwell sisters’ magical powers. Known affectionately as “the Manor,” their impressive home became like another character on the show. Keep reading to learn more about the Manor and whether the witches could actually afford to live there in real life.
‘Charmed’ premiered in 1998
Set in the late ‘90s, Charmed premiered on Oct. 7, 1998, on The WB. From creator Constance M. Burge and produced by Aaron Spelling, the show centered around three sisters who find out they have magical powers. Known in the magical world as the Charmed Ones, they are known for their remarkable powers.
Over the course of the series, Prue (Shannen Doherty), Piper (Holly Marie Combs), and Phoebe Halliwell (Alyssa Milano) have to learn to control their powers while also learning how to balance their normal and supernatural lives. Fans tuned in every week to watch the Charmed Ones fight evil and navigate their lives. Despite behind-the-scenes drama that led to Doherty’s eventual departure from the series, Charmed continued on for 178 episodes and eight seasons before ending in 2006.
The Halliwell Manor is in San Francisco
Right from the first episode, the sisters’ home proved special. A stately, historic home in San Francisco, California, the Manor is equal parts charming and mysterious. As fans learn in the show, it sits on a spiritual nexus. Even though it has its quirks — there’s always something that needs repairing — the house has been in the Halliwell family for generations.
It provides a safe haven for Prue, Piper, Phoebe, and later Paige Matthews (Rose McGowan) when they need it and sometimes it’s where they battle demons.
Good news for Charmed fans, the Halliwell Manor is a real place. On the show, it’s located at 1329 Prescott St., according to Fandom. But in real life, it can be found at 1329 Carroll Ave. in Los Angeles.
What do the Halliwell sisters do for a living?
Understandably, fighting off evil doesn’t leave the Charmed Ones with much time for work. But throughout the show, their careers are an element to the story. With the original three; Piper, Prue, and Phoebe, they became the residents of the Halliwell Manor as young women after inheriting the home from their deceased grandmother. Had it not been for that we don’t think they could afford the impressive digs.
Prue worked at a museum before quitting and getting a job at an auction house. Later she becomes a photographer. As for Piper, she works at a restaurant before opening her own. Eventually, she decides to open her own bar and music venue.
As for Phoebe, her job history is a sticking point between her and Prue. The youngest of the Halliwell sisters, Phoebe has trouble holding down a job. Later in the show, she finds luck working as an advice columnist.
How much does the Manor cost in real life?
Thanks to Zillow and Curbed Los Angeles, we have some stats on the Halliwell manor. Given the show took place in the late ’90s, prices will have fluctuated. And San Francisco’s real estate market is competitive.
Considered one of the most expensive U.S. cities to live in, there’s likely no way the Halliwell sisters would have been living in the Manor had it not been a family home. With five bedrooms and one bathroom, the real-life manor is 3,000 square feet and it’s valued at more than $1 million. Even if by some chance the Halliwell sisters could have afforded it, we’re guessing it would’ve taken most if not all of Prue’s paycheck to cover the bills and upkeep.
Even though the idea of the three sisters living there is highly unlikely in the real world, the Halliwell Manor served as a great setting for Charmed.
