Jared Polis became the first openly homosexual member of Congress to become a parent as he and his partner announced the birth of their son.

The Colorado Democrat revealed that his child, Caspian Julius, was born on Friday and weighed in at 8lbs 120z.

Polis and partner Marlon Reis sent a note to friends and family asking well-wishers for 'nice thoughts for Caspian, humankind, the planet and the universe.'

The email message added: 'Baby and parents are doing well, baby has learned to cry already!'

Polis, a 36-year-old multi-millionaire, did not reveal whether his son was adopted or conceived through a surrogate pregnancy.

He is serving his second term in office and is one of four openly gay members currently serving in Congress.

Fellow Democrats Barney Frank, of Massachusetts, David Cicilline, of Rhode Island and Tammy Baldwin, of Wisconsin, are the other three  homosexual lawmakers in the House of Representatives. None have conceived any children.

Polis, an award-winning philanthropist, has founded a number of companies and is one of the 10 richest members of Congress worth an estimated $65 million.
