James Corden has revealed he has turned his back on his Salvation Army upbringing after having doubts about his religion.

In a candid interview with comedian John Bishop, the Late Late Show host said he thought nothing of dressing up in ‘a uniform and marching through the town with a trumpet’ when he was a child.

But while his family’s beliefs remain unwavering Corden, 37, admits that he would no longer call himself a Christian.

He said: ‘When you ask me what are my beliefs I really struggle because you can’t argue with science, only a mad man would.

‘There’s a great saying that it’s not the stuff you know that will undo you, it’s the stuff you think you know that just ain’t so. I feel like that about faith, I really don’t know.’

Despite saying he was a ‘spiritualist’ he said he ‘would never go as far as say I am a Christian’.

He added: ‘That relies on a greater belief than I have, but I absolutely do have a hunch that this can’t be for nothing.’

The Salvation Army is an international charitable organisation and Christian church derived from Methodism.

This is not the first time he has spoken out about his doubts about his faith. Speaking on Desert Island Discs in 2012 Corden praised the church but criticised some individual ‘Salvationists’ which he referred to as ‘insular’.

The former Gavin and Stacey star Corden is now a huge hit Stateside and currently lives in LA with his wife Julia Carey and their two children Max, four and Carey, 18 months.

Calling her his ‘anchor’ he told John Bishop: ‘She’s an amazing person, amazing spirit, and amazing presence to be around.

‘The only thing I doubt in her is that she chose to marry me.’

Speaking about two friends who had recently moved house he said: ‘What was amazing was I looked at Julia, and thought about what she’s done and given up for us as a family, to be together, our daughter was seven weeks old, we packed up our house and moved to the other side of the world where we knew no one.

‘I went to work and Julia just had to find a life for herself and has done, amazingly.’
