Here's What You Can (and Can't) Do on the Platform

OnlyFans is a subscription site where content creators can earn money from users for their work. This can be by a pay-per-view system, tips or even money sent monthly to them by subscription.

While content creators from many realms post on OnlyFans, the site has been mainly linked to those who share sexually explicit images.

However, from October 1, that will no longer be allowed, as the platform is banning this type of material, though nude photographs will still be permitted as long as they follow the site's terms of use.

Speaking to Newsweek, an OnlyFans spokesperson said: "Effective 1 October, 2021, OnlyFans will prohibit the posting of any content containing sexually-explicit conduct. In order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the platform, and to continue to host an inclusive community of creators and fans, we must evolve our content guidelines.

"Creators will continue to be allowed to post content containing nudity as long as it is consistent with our Acceptable Use Policy. These changes are to comply with the requests of our banking partners and payout providers.

"We will be sharing more details in the coming days, and we will actively support and guide our creators through this change in content guidelines. We remain dedicated to our community of 130 million users and over 2 million creators that have earned over $5 billion on our platform.

"OnlyFans remains committed to the highest levels of safety and content moderation of any social platform. All creators are verified prior to being able to upload any content to OnlyFans, and all uploaded content is checked by automated systems and human moderators."

It is unclear how many creators this change will affect, and how this may change OnlyFans' revenues given the company takes 20 percent of all payments.

As the new rules are set to change things on the site, we break down what users can and can't do on the platform.

What OnlyFans Users and Subscribers Can Do

To start, a content creator can start an OnlyFans account to post their images and videos on the site.

They can take advantage of the pay-per-view model by setting up a subscription package, meaning they set the price for their content, which stays behind a paywall.

They can also make money using tips, or adding premium features like messaging privately for extra cash.

As a user, they enter the site and have to subscribe or pay a one-time fee to see the content they desire, whether it is fitness workouts, cookery classes or, as the site has become known for, pornography.

Fans and creators must be 18 years old, and not include anyone under that age in their content. They must only use their accounts for a lawful purpose.

The acceptable use information in the OnlyFans terms of service sets out clearly what is allowed on the platform, and more importantly, what isn't.

What Not To Do On OnlyFans

The acceptable use policy on OnlyFans is pretty extensive, and it mainly consists of stopping users and fans from acting in an illegal, immoral and unhelpful manner.

Users are not allowed to share accounts with others, or post illegal content on their accounts, such as defamatory, fraudulent items or those that encourage violence or illegal activity.

They also are firm against child exploitation on the site, saying under-18s must not be posted on the site at all and those who are included in content must give their written consent to be there.

This comes as the site's first transparency report suggested 15 accounts were suspended for circulating inappropriate images of children.

Content referring to a long list of items including incest, self-harm and suicide, drugs, weapons, necrophilia, violence and lack of sexual consent, prostitution and "revenge porn" is not permitted under any circumstances.

As well as this, hate speech and discriminatory speech are not allowed, along with breaches of someone's privacy by sharing personal data and using the site to abuse, harass, bully or stalk is not allowed.

When it comes to nudity, this will be allowed on the site so long as it adheres to the rules, which includes making sure it is not broadcast from a public place or where public nudity is illegal, or in a place where someone is likely to see it or it could cause offense to another.

Content with nudity must also avoid involving product placements, advertising or job posting, as well as contests or sales.

While the list of don'ts on the site is pretty long, the terms also ask content creators to respect one another's creativity by not sharing their work without authorization or credit, as well as avoiding deceptive work like deep fakes.
