Shocking Video Shows Car Wedged Under Semi-Truck as Its Dragged Down Highway
A video that was shared on social media showed a car's front end pinned under a large semi-truck as it is dragged along an Illinois highway.
A cloud of smoke makes it difficult to see the car in the video at first, but as the driver got closer to the truck, it becomes more clear. The car's front half is wedged between the road and the truck's body, and it is reportedly pulled along the Tri-State Tollway sideways.
As the person filming the video passed the car and the truck, the driver of the car pinned under the truck stuck their hand out of the window and waved.
NBC-affiliate WTMJ-TV reported that officers with the Illinois State Police Department stated the incident occurred at about 11:40 a.m. and there were no injuries. Two lanes were closed during the officers' investigation but reopened around noon.
According to a police report sent to Newsweek by the Illinois State Police Department, the driver of the car was changing lanes when the car got stuck under the truck. No additional information was available.
Newsweek reached out to the individual who posted the video for comment.
Many people took to the comments section to express their disbelief over what they watched.
"Talk about watch my blind spot!" one person commented.
Another wrote: "This driver should be done driving trucks."
Others wondered if the truck driver could have known about the car.
"He is obviously not checking his mirrors every 15 seconds like he supposed to...SMH," someone wrote.
According to the National Safety Council, 5,005 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash in 2019. The organization reported that large trucks accounted for 10 percent of all vehicles involved in fatal crashes. A large truck, the organization stated, is defined as any medium or heavy truck, not including buses and motor homes, that weighs more than 10,000 pounds.
This is not the only instance of an unbelievable accident with a large truck.
Newsweek reported in November that a woman was reportedly driving across a bridge in Washington state and slowed down when the car in front of her slowed. A semi-truck behind her did not stop in time and it rolled on top of her car, crushing it.
Though first responders found the car in a crumpled heap, they were shocked when they heard the woman yelling for help inside the car. Despite being stuck inside the car, the woman was in stable condition.
A tow truck lifted the truck off of the woman's car, and she climbed out through the passenger window.
Aside from some pain in her ribcage and head, the woman was otherwise uninjured. The driver was also uninjured, though he received a citation for following too closely behind.
